REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo said construction of the Marunda dam in North Jakarta would be completed by the end of this year.

The 56 hectare dam is expected to be able to hold water to prevent floods in North Jakarta, the governor, better known with the name of Jokowi, said here on Wednesday.

"It is expected to function fully by the end of this year." he said when inspecting the progress of work in the project.

He said there are around six hectares of land needed for the dam still are yet to be cleared.

"Land clearing is in the final process of compensation to cost Rp65 billion. The fund would be set aside from the city budget for 2014," he said.

If necessary part of the fund could be made available from the revised budget of this year, he added.

The concept used in the development of the Marunda dam is the same as used for the Pluit dam with open green space.

"The green space would include playing ground for children and space for park planted with various tree species," he said.

Beside traffic jams, floods are two big problems faced by the capital city and Jokowi have pledged to cope with the problems before he finally contested the presidential election, which he won.
