REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, VIENNA - Scientists from the University of Graz in Austria registered on Wednesday one of the strongest solar radiation eruptions to occur during the past ten years that had led to radio failures, ORF reported Thursday.

The eruption was registered by the University's Kanzelhoehe Observatory. The scientists said the energy eruptions from the sun could cause disturbances in the earth's magnetic field, thus affecting technical systems both on earth and in space.

Solar eruptions, such as coronal mass ejections, draw their energy from the strong magnetic fields of sunspots. Head of the observatory Astrid Veronig said the current sunspot grouping facing earth located on the south of the sun had a diameter of 125, 000 kilometres, so large it can be seen without a telescope.

It is still however only half the total size of sunspots recorded in October 2003, a period marked by extreme solar flare occurrences that resulted in auroras being seen even from Austria. The scientists said further disruptions to the earth's magnetic field through continued turbulent space weather are possible in the coming weeks.
