REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The European Union (EU) is offering scholarships to 1,600 Indonesian students wishing to pursue higher education for master and doctorate degrees in Europe, an envoy has said.

"The EU and its member states are organizing the 'Scholarship Information Day' to make Indonesian parents and students aware about 1,600 scholarships and possibly more," EU Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam Vincent Guerend stated here on Saturday.

The EU member states which offer free education are Germany, Britain, France, Austria, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Italy, he informed.

Guerend explained that hundreds of noted institutes of higher learning in Europe are participants in this scholarship program. To apply for the scholarships, the students can consult representatives of the scholarships organizing committee, he advised.

He noted that most Indonesian students prefer to continue studies in major European countries. However, several institutes of higher learning in small European countries also have internationally-recognized curricula.

He observed that higher education is an important aspect of EU-Indonesia cooperation and, therefore, the EU warmly welcomed Indonesian students wishing to avail of the best education opportunities offered by Europe.

"At this moment, some 3,000 students have registered online to participate in this program. We hope they will understand and decide about the scholarships to study at proper schools," he added.
