MUI's Deputy Chairman says Anies-Sandi first task is to restore peace

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy Chairman of Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) Zainut Tauhid Saadi congratulated Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno (Anies-Sandi) for their victory in the Jakarta gubernatorial election. He thanked God for knowing the result. 

"Congratulation to Mr. Anis Rasyid Baswedan and Mr. Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno as a pair of candidate who temporary stated to win based on the quick count," he said to Republika.co.id by a short message on Thursday (April 20).  

According to Zainut, MUI hoped Anies-Sandi could take the mandatory for the upcoming five years. The first thing to do is restoring peace (islah) or reconciliation between the two rival groups.

Unity was very important to the future of Jakarta. "Sometimes, competition and different perception trigger people to fight and attack each other," he said.  

MUI called all elements of society to unite, to strengthen the brotherhood and to forget any clash.
