Balikpapan's Sepinggan Airport second best in the world

Sepinggan Airport is 2nd best service with 5 million to million passengers capacity.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BALIKPAPAN -- The Sepinggan airport of Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, has been named the second best in service in the world for ones with annual handling capacity of 5 million to 15 million passengers. The best in that category is the Mumbay airport of Hyderabad, India.

On Wednesday, the airport received the token of appreciation Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards 2017 from the Airport Council International, the Montreal, Canada-based airport rating agency. Other Indonesian airports receiving awards from the agency were I Gusti Ngurah Rai international airport of Denpasar, Bali, and Surabaya's Djuanda airport - all under the state airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I.

Ngurah Rai is the best among airports with handling capacity of 15 million to 25 million passengers, and Djuanda is the third best in the same category.

The token of appreciation for the Sepinggan airport was handed over to Chief Executive of PT Angkasa Pura I, Faik Fahmi by Director General of ACI Angela Gittens in the ASQ Customer Excellence Global Summit participated in by 127 airport authorities and operators all over the world in Halifax, Canada.

"The award is a form of appreciation for improvement that has continued to be in process in the airports operated by PT Angkasa Pura I," Faik Fahmi said here on Friday.

Faik said the appreciation was not only for Angkasa Pura but also for all people of East Kalimantan proud with the Sepinggan airport. General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura I Sepinggan Farid Indra Nugraha said the port management is committed to continuing to seek improvement in the airport service.

Farid said currently Sepinggan airport has an annual handling capacity of 10 million passengers. He said he was especially proud of the ability of the management to keep the Sepinggan airport clean that earned the old airport the international appreciation. The airport was built by the BBM oil company of the Dutch colonial administration in 1925.
