Jail term finished, Ahok: Freedom!

Ahok has finished a jail term for blasphemy.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- Former governor of DKI Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) has been released from jail, after serving a two-year sentence for blasphemy case. He got three months and 15 days remission totally.

He left Mako Brimob prison at Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java, on Thursday morning (Jan 24). He did not greet his supporters who have been waiting outside of prison since Wednesday afternoon.

Through an Instagram account, @basukibtp, Ahok uploaded photos during the administration process of his release. There were three photos uploaded, including a photo showing Ahok's face while posing three fingers used to stamp the documents.

"The administrative process before being released at the Brimob office this morning. Freedom!" he said on social media app Instagram.

His representative said, Ahok was picked up by his eldest son, Nicholas Sean, and a representative from the BTP (Basuki Tjahaja Purnama) team. He went straight to his residence after being released.

According to his lawyer, Teguh Samudra, Ahok have planned to pursue an oil business. In addition, he has signed a contract to host a talk show in one of the private television station.

President Joko Widodo gave his comments regarding Ahok's release and his decision to not join politics. "He was the one who has undergone a legal process. It's up to him (whether join politics or not)," Jokowi said, on Wednesday.

Vice president candidate number 02 Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno sent a prayer for Ahok. He was an opponent of Ahok in Governor Election in 2017, as a deputy governor candidates who paired with Anies Baswedan.

"I only pray for the best, of course, for Pak. Ahok, a democratic partner during the governor election. We're praying for each other, wishing the best for him," said Sandiaga in Tomang, Jakarta, on Thursday.

Governor of DKI Jakarta also welcomed Ahok's freedom. "Congratulations to be reunited with your family and we from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government have an obligation to facilitate every citizen in accordance with their rights," Anies said in the Jakarta City Hall.

Ahok was convicted in a blasphemy case and sentenced to 2 years in prison. He was detained as of May 9, 2017 and had received a 2017 Christmas remission for 15 days and a general remission of August 17, 2018 for two months. On the last December, he got Christmas remission before being released in January, 24.
