REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TIMIKA -- Papua Governor Lukas Enembe advised the management of PT Freeport Indonesia and various subcontractors to immediately reinstate 8,300 strike workers. Melkianus Bosawer, Head of the Labor Inspection Office at Papua Manpower office in Timika, said on Thursday that Enembe had given PT Freeport management a deadline of two weeks to follow up on the letter.

The governor expects Mimika District Government, district heads and Provincial Legislative Assembly, and all related components in Mimika District to seriously follow up this issue. He said that the labor issues that occur in Freeport are in Papua and not in Jakarta.

If the management of PT Freeport does not respond to the letter within two weeks, "we will report this matter back to the governor," Bosawer stated. Regarding labor issues, which have been taking place at PT Freeport since May 2017, the Papua Manpower Office has sent labor inspectors to conduct investigations and inspections in Timika since May 2018.

"We have come down to do a study related to labor issues that occur in PT Freeport by referring to Law Number 13 of 2003 concerning Manpower, Law No. 2 of 2004 concerning the Settlement of Industrial Relations Disputes and regulations concerning the labor inspection system," Bosawer explained.

The results state that strikes carried out by PT Freeport employees and various subcontractor companies in May 2017 are legal, Bosawer noted. Regarding the recommendations of the labor inspector of the Papua Manpower Office, the management of PT Freeport has actually been given the opportunity for seven days to carry out clarification, but until now, the data related to labor issues have not been submitted by Freeport.

Freeport is also asked to immediately reinstate all 'moker' (strike) employees and is prohibited from recruiting new employees before the labor issues are resolved to completion. Bosawer stressed that there were no more negotiations with Freeport management regarding the problems of 'moker' employees.
