REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir said the contract extension of Indonesia national team coach Shin Tae-yong depends largely on the coach's performance at the 2023 Asian Cup and the 2024 U-23 Asia Cup.
This was stated by Erick after attending MoU Groundbreaking PSSI and Abdi Waluyo Hospital in Menara Danareksa, Jakarta, Thursday (18/1/2024).
“The extension (of Shin Tae-yong's current contract) is until June, but later we will review his performance for the Senior Asia Cup (2023 Asia Cup) and certainly the Asia Cup U-23 (Asia Cup U23 2024),” PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir said.
Erick said that if the South Korean coach's performance was good, it would open the possibility of negotiating a contract extension until 2027.
“If the performance is good, yes we will sit down to (negotiate the contract) until 2027. Already, it was already said (the current contract), until June. If the performance is good, until 2027,” said Erick, who also serves as the Minister
of state-owned enterprises.
The former Inter Milan president said his communication with Shin Tae-yong went well and always provided the support needed by the Garuda team.
“We value each other. I'm the same coach STY communicates well. I support. Yesterday I asked for an extra bus, I helped. Ask for more doctors, I'll help. I support it for sure. I've never discriminated against any coach,” Erick said
.
But Erick said that Shin Tae-yong's task was not easy because Indonesia last played in the Asian Cup in 2007, while the Indonesia U-23 team only appeared in the U-23 Asian Cup.
The Indonesian national team is scheduled to face Vietnam in the second match of Group D of the 2023 Asian Cup which takes place at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, Doha, on Friday (19/1) at 21:30pm.
