REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has signed the Presidential Decree (Keppres) of the Republic of Indonesia Number 8 of 2024 on Public Holidays. The Papres included a change of nomenclature from 'Isa Almasih' to 'Jesus Christ'.

The Coordinating Minister of Human Development and Culture (PMK), Muhadjir Effendy explained that the change of nomenclature 'Isa Almasih' to 'Jesus Christ' in the naming of national holidays, adapted to the common designations used by the people and their adherents.

“Adapted to the designation commonly used by its adherents,” Muhadjir told Republika.co.id in Jakarta on Tuesday (30/1/2024).

Muhadjir said that the name change of the nomenclature was made taking into account the proposals and suggestions of the relevant religious leaders. “Pay attention to the proposals and suggestions of the relevant religious leaders,” the chairman of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership Council (PP) said in a brief statement.

Contacted separately regarding the reason for the change of the name of the national holiday nomenclature, Coordinator of Special Staff of the President of RI Ari Dwipayana requested that he inquire about it to the Minister of Religious Affairs (Menag) Yaqut Cholil Qoumas. Because, the name change of the nomenclature was proposed by Menag.

“Menag is more competent to answer because of Menag's proposal,” Ari said when contacted by Republika.co.id.

For the record, President Jokowi has signed Presidential Decree No. 8 of 2024 on Public Holidays on January 29, 2024.
