“We note that the Government of Indonesia successfully hosted the 10th World Water Forum, which has received positive responses and broad participation from the international community and provides an important platform for the world to address water challenges, build consensus on water issues, and share successful experiences in the field of water management,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mao Ning said in a press briefing on Monday (27/5/2024).

He said that, in recent years, extreme weather phenomena occurred around the world. Floods and droughts have become more complex as well as unpredictable. Therefore, China attaches great importance to cooperation in the field of water conservation.

“We are committed to working with island nations and small islands, including Indonesia, to jointly address the challenges of climate change. In recent years, China and Indonesia have exchanged and cooperated in the fields of sustainable water resource management, water conservation development, mountain disaster prevention and control, flood and drought prevention, and other fields,” Mao Ning said.

He added that under the framework of Asian regional cooperation as well as China-ASEAN cooperation, China and Indonesia have already carried out practical project cooperation. The project involved the construction and management of dams as well as desalination of seawater. “These measures are essential to promote sustainable economic and community development,” he said.

Mao emphasized that water is essential for human survival and development. China, he said, is ready to work with other countries to strengthen cooperation on water practices, exchange ideas on water control, discuss water control strategies, share experiences, jointly build a water control platform, and accelerate the implementation of water-related goals in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The 10th World Water Forum, held in Bali on 18-25 May 2024, carries the theme “Water for Shared Prosperity”. About 1,300 official delegates from 170 countries and 47 international organizations participated in the forum.

The week-long meeting produced a number of things, one of which was the Ministerial Declaration. The declaration included a proposal to establish a Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience, proposed a World Lake Day commemoration, and promoted the issue of integrated water resources management on small islands.

The 10th World Water Forum also proposed the existence of a Global Water Fund. The platform will become a multi-stakeholder platform to help with effective and sustainable water funding issues. The 10th World Water Forum also produced 113 projects worth 9.4 billion US dollars. The project includes accelerating the supply of drinking water for three million households to domestic wastewater management for 300,000 households around the world.
