REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and a limited delegation of the Indonesian government left for Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday (17/12/2024). Prabowo flew on a presidential plane via Lanud Halim Perdanakusuma, East Jakarta, on a state visit and attended the D-8 High-Level Conference in Cairo, Egypt.
“This visit will be the first state visit of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to Egypt since 2013. So 11 years on, Egypt is our close friend, a strategic partner for Indonesia and an important country in the Middle East,” Prabowo told a news conference accompanied by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka and a number of ministers from the Red and White Cabinet.
Prabowo said he would hold a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Next, he will attend the D-8 Summit, which is an organization of economic cooperation and development between eight developing countries established in 1997.
“Which comprises the countries of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Turkey, and Pakistan. In the present conditions, I think that this D-8 summit is an important event and especially according to the current rotation from January 1, 2026 Indonesia will take turns to be the chairman of the D-8, therefore I am present,” Prabowo said.
After the D-8 summit, Prabowo will have a number of unofficial meetings with several economic figures, and industry figures. After that, he stopped first in Malaysia before arriving in Indonesia. Prabowo is scheduled to meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. “I guess that's what I want to say,” Prabowo said.
