More than 100 inmates escape from prison in Medan

Police tighten security in Aceh to recapture more than 200 inmates who escaped from Tanjung Gusta Peniteniary in Medan on Sunday.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - More than 100 inmates escaped from 1st Class' Prison of Medan, North Sumatra, after riot on Thursday night at 06.30 PM.  

"Based on information from the warden, Muji Raharjo, 150 inmates escape through the door for porter in the prison complex,". Head of Public Relations at Directorate General of Prisons, Asmar Hadi said on Friday.

Blackout has caused the inmates without water on Thursday morning. Some inmates provoked and sparked other inmates. While some others attack guards set offices on fire. A total of 15 officers was under hostaged. 

The prison is holding nearly 2,600 inmates. It means, the prison now hold about 247 percent of inmates more than it should. All the inmates are adult male.

"The prison is over capacity. It is far from ideal prison which is able to accommodate inmates," Deputy Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Denny Indrayana said. 

Police is still conducting pursuit of the inmates who escaped to some settlements near the prison.
