REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia and Philippines ended the 20 year old negotiations for the delimitation of their overlapping exclusive economic zones (EEZs). President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono praised the maritime boundary agreement.
"This negotiation discussed about the delimitation of overlapping boundaries. Indonesia and Philippines have their own EEZs. Thank God it could be completed within 20 years," Yudhoyono said before his departure in Jakarta on Thursday as reported by Esthi Maharani.
The agreement represented a new milestone for Indonesia to deal with the completion of maritime boundary. Many things can be conducted through this agreement. For example, to confront transnational crime, trafficking and smuggling activities, connectivity and development of maritime resources.
The Philippines government on Monday said that they had reached an agreement with Indonesia on maritime boundary dispute after 20 years negotiation. They hope to sign the agreement soon. Both countries will prepare the text of agreement and details of EEZ chart, especially in Sulawesi and Mindanao waters.
EEZ is an area extending along 370 kilometers from its coast. A nation has exclusive rights over fishing activity and exploitation of oil and gas reserves in the sea.
