REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANILA -- Some 1,000 residents of two villages in southern Philippine province of Maguindanao have been displaced by the armed conflict that erupted on Tuesday between the government troops and Muslim militants, the state disaster agency said Wednesday.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Executive Director Alexander Pama said that approximately 200 families or 1,000 individuals from the villages of Inaladan and Ganta in Shariff Saydona Mustapha town in Maguindanao were affected and evacuated to safer place.
The skirmishes between the 45th Infantry Battalion of the 6th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), the breakaway group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), transpired in Libutan village, Mamasapano town in Maguindanao on Tuesday morning.
Pama said the local disaster agency continuously monitors the situation and constantly coordinates with the village officials and the local Humanitarian Emergency Action Response Team for immediate needs of the affected families and updates regarding the incident.
Two militants were reportedly killed in the encounter.
