REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEIJING - Indonesia and China have agreed to enhance their efforts in fighting terrorism as part of the security cooperation between the two nations. The Indonesian National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) and the Chinese Ministry of Public Security signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Beijing, Thursday, expressing their commitment to step up cooperation in their fight against terrorism.

The MoU covers the exchange of intelligent information, knowledge and experience, cooperation between anti-terror agencies, and commitment to increase the capability of anti-terror personnel and institutions between the two countries.

Both nations also agreed to encourage mutual visits by high-ranking officials, analysts and field personnel of the two countries, BNPT chief Ansyaad Mbai told Antara in Beijing a moment before the signing of the MoU.

"Indonesia has six positive track records which have been recognized by several countries and even the United Nations. Therefore, China is eager to cooperate with Indonesia in this respect," he said.

Indonesia and China had explored the possibility of counter-terrorism cooperation shortly after they signed a strategic agreement in April, 2005, he said.

"The mutual visits by high ranking officials of the two countries confirmed their commitment to prevent and combat terrorism," he said.
