REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DHAKA -- Bangladeshi ex-prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called a fresh 24-hour strike from Thursday morning demanding safe return of a leader who went missing several weeks ago.

BNP spokesperson Barkat Ullah Bulu made the strike announcement through a press release on Tuesday.

The party also announced to stage demonstrations across the country Wednesday in protest against the disappearance of the party's Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed.

Ahmed's family alleged some plainclothes men showed identity cards of the Detective Branch (DB) of Bangladesh Police and picked up him from a house in Dhaka on the night of March 10.

But police officially denied of arresting Ahmed, who was made BNP spokesman following arrest of another top party leader.

Bangladesh's capital Dhaka and southeastern seaport city Chittagong will remain out of the purview of strike due to the city corporation polls slated for April 28, said the statement.
