REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government seeking to become permanent members of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in the period 2019-2020 with the aim of maintaining stability in the region and the world.
"We will continue to have the support of friendly countries for elective (non-permanent members of the UN Security Council) 2019-2020. We can make a major contribution in maintaining global stability," said Ministry of Foreign Affairs's spokesman Nasir Arrmanatha in Jakarta, Wednesday (29/4).
According to Arrmanatha, Indonesia so far had done much contribute in maintaining security and stability at the regional level, so Indonesia wants to contribute in create security and stability at global level through membership in the UNSC.
"So far, we had done much contribute to maintaining security and stability at the regional level and this is our chance to create the world's voice more stable, safe, and conducive to global development," he said.
He mentioned President Joko Widodo in bilateral meetings with a number of friendly countries have also requested support for the candidacy of Indonesia as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
The man who is familiarly called Tata also said Indonesia is a country which encourages the efforts of the UN Security Council reform and expansion of permanent members and non-permanent members in that world organization.
"So the future of the UN Security Council can be more effective, efficient, and promotes the interests of the whole country, not just a group of countries," he said.
Earlier, Zimbabwe expressed support for the nomination of Indonesia as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council 2019-2020 period. Support was delivered by the President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe during a bilateral meeting with the President of Indonesia Joko Widodo on the sidelines of the Asian-African Conference (AAC) in Jakarta.
Apart from Zimbabwe, support also came from Sweden. In this regard, Indonesia and Sweden had agreed to support each other to get the position of non-permanent members in the Security Council.
