REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LANGKAT -- Six traditional fishermen from West Brandan, Langkat district, North Sumatra province, have been detained by Malaysian maritime police in Langkawi.

"Six traditional fishermen from Langkat district were nabbed and are now being detained in Langkawi, Malaysia," Chairman of the North Sumatra Office of the Indonesian Traditional Fishermen Association (KNTI) Tajruddin Hasibuan said in Stabat on Wednesday.

The arrests were made when the fishermen were fishing in a Sondang motorboat captained by one Abdul Rais.

On their way home, after spending three days on the boat, they were caught by the Malaysian maritime police on May 9 and taken to Langkawi.

The fishermen, Abdul Rais, Daiman, Zailani, M. Zais, Radit and Hery, are residents of Kelantan village, West Brandan, Langkat.

Hasibuan hopes that the central government helps to get the six fishermen released.
