Over 1,000 passangers stranded in C Philippine ports due to tropical storm

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANILA -- Over 1,000 people are stranded in different ports in central Philippines as tropical storm Egay continues to affect the northern part of the country, the national disaster management agency said Saturday.

Aside from the 1,022 passengers, 34 vessels and 13 motorbancas are also stranded in the ports of Cebu, Tagbiliran and Dumaguete, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development has also pre- positioned stockpile of 185,150 family packs worth over 62 million pesos (1.38 million U.S. dollars) for those who would be displaced by the weather disturbance.

Egay has slowed down and intensified as it continues to move towards northern Luzon, the state weather forecasting agency said. It has maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 120 kph.
