12 Indonesians in Saudi Arabia freed from death penalty

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Director of the Protection of Indonesia Citizens and Indonesia Legal Entities, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal revealed that during 2015, 12 Indonesians were exempt from the death penalty in Saudi Arabia.

"So Indonesians who were freed from death penalty in Saudi Arabia since 2011 was 68 citizens," said Iqbal, Tuesday (4/8).

The last citizens who were free from death penalty are Rika Mustikawati from Sukaresmi, Tanah Sareal, Bogor. She was previously sentenced to death on 15th May 2012 by the General Court of Bisha, Saudi Arabia. She was indicted attacked her employer’s wife, named Salma, with witchcraft.

In September 2014, the General Court's decision will be determined by the Court of Appeal, so that the Consulate General began to manage a legal file of liberation and repatriation process.

Supposedly, Rika would be discharged at Tuesday (28/7), but it was  still hampered by the immigration administration in Saudi Arabia. A number of attempts have been made in order to release Rika. The Indonesia Ambassador in Riyadh also has submitted a letter to the King of Saudi Arabia to ask for forgiveness.
