REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir will attend the Pacific Island Forum (PIF) to be held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on September 7-11.

"I will attend the PIF to represent Indonesia as a dialogue and development partner. Our presence is expected on September 10-11," Fachir remarked here on Tuesday.

According to the minister, Indonesia has attended the PIF several times as a dialogue and development partner.

"Indonesia will always contribute to the development of countries in the Pacific region," he emphasized.

"Indonesia is part of the Pacific region. So, we attend the Pacific Island Development Forum, PIF, and the Melanesian Spearhead Group," Fachir stated.

The deputy foreign minister pointed out that Indonesia has significantly contributed to developing the Pacific countries through cooperation in the field of capacity development.

The issues to be discussed during the forum include climate change, blue economy, and connectivity.

However, climate change will become a major issue in the discussion as the small island states of Kiribati, Palau, and Tuvalu in the Pacific have been affected by it.

The results of the discussion on climate change will be submitted during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, France.

Earlier, Indonesia planned to reveal a special mission during the climate change conference to be held in November-December 2015 in Paris, France, President Joko Widodo stated.

Cabinet Secretary Pramono Agung noted after a meeting with several officials led by the president on Monday that the meeting was held to discuss the preparations for the climate change conference scheduled to be held in Paris.

"The event is an important forum for the world. The president wants Indonesia, as an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia, to deliver some documents. We do not just follow the will of the world," he remarked.

This mission is being strengthened and discussed by several experts and relevant ministries.

On the same occasion, the Environment and Forestry Ministry had prepared a document to be submitted during the global climate change conference in Paris.

Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya affirmed that the document had been discussed by the relevant stakeholders and compiled through a lengthy trial process.

"Once reported, we will upload the document soon. We will wait for inputs for two weeks," Nurbaya pointed out.

Six governors from Aceh, Papua, West Papua, Central Kalimantan, and South Sumatra, among others, will participate in the global climate change conference.

The meeting was also attended by Chairperson of the Steering Committee on Climate Change Sarwono Kusumaatmadja and the president's special envoy on climate change, Rachmat Witoelar.
