ASEAN-China to strengthen security agreement

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEIJING -- The ten- country ASEAN and China will strengthen security agreement by promoting the mechanism of law enforcement against transnational crimes.

The agreement would be discussed at a routine ministerial meeting on law enforcement and cooperation between ASEAN and China here on Friday, an official statement issued on Thursday by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security.

Indonesian delegation to the meeting with a theme ""Security for Development" would be headed by state pol;ice chief Gen.Badrodin Haiti.

"The meeting would be focused on the mechanism of law enforcement and security agreement to stamp out transnational crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking and security for vital objects," the statement said.

A number of security officials such as police and interpol officials from a number of other countries including Australia, Russia, and member countries of Shanghai Cooperation, have also confirmed attending the meeting.

Representative of regional and international organizations such as ASEANAPOL, U.N. Organization of International Migration, and U.N. Drug and Criminal Agency and ASEAN secretariat would also take part in the meeting.

China and Mekong river Triangle Countries including Laos, Laos,Thailand and Myanmar would intensively address drug issues in the region, known to be rampant with drug trafficking.
