REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW YORK -- UN General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft on Saturday welcomed the adoption of Paris Agreement to tackle climate change, saying that "this agreement reaffirms the value of multilateralism in addressing global challenges."

The president "welcomes the adoption of the Paris Agreement at the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change," said a statement issued here by his spokesperson.

"Today's agreement signals nothing less than a renaissance for humankind as we collectively embrace the global challenge of climate change and endeavor to transition to a more sustainable way of living that respects the needs of people and our planet," the statement said.

The historic Paris Agreement on climate change is finally adopted Saturday by the 196 Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) during the COP21 hosted by France.
