Sony wins Singapore Open 2016 after defeating Son Wan Ho of South Korea

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's men's single player Sony Dwi Kuncoro came out as the winner at the Singapore Open 2016 on Sunday after successfully defeating Son Wan Ho of South Korea in three games 21-16, 13-21, 21-14 in the final round of the super series tournament.

Sony, according to the All Indonesia Badminto Association (PBSI), had to play for 63 minutes before he could finally defeat his opponent.

"Certainly I am glad with the victory. I did not believe I could become the champion because the matches from the qualification round were all hard to win," he said.

Sony dominated the first game against the South Korean who is ranked 10th in the world but in the second game he made a lot of unforced errors to make him to lose it.

In the third round Sony played more aggressively and led point collection until 13-10 before his opponent equalized the score to 13-13. Later Sony led again and finally ended the match in his favor 21-14.

Sony's victory over Chinese top player Lin Dan in the semifinal round had increased his self-confidence.

"I enjoyed the game very much today. I felt comfortable playing after winning the match against Lin Dan," he said.

He said his victory proved that a senior athlete could still be win a title through hard work.
