REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, GORONTALO -- Awareness is being spread among all villagers in Gorontalo Province regarding the outbreak of anthrax disease that may pose a health threat to their livestock.
Head of Marine Fisheries and Animal Husbandry (DKPP) of Gorontalo District Haris Tome on Monday urged the people to always exercise caution while accepting or purchasing cattle from outside their region.
"Do not accept cattle from outside the region. A health certificate from a veterinarian rather than animal paramedics should be issued for all cattle brought from outside," stated Tome.
Haris also emphasized that all horse and goat owners should come forward to vaccinate their livestock.
Meanwhile, Tabongo Sub-district Chief Rosman Yusuf noted that there were some 800 cattle in his region, whereas in East Limehe, cattle-fattening facilities had become the key source of public income.
"I hope the Gorontalo district government will offer greater support to tap this potential by always paying attention and safeguarding the animals from bacterial infections, such as anthrax, by providing vaccines and treatment," Rosman affirmed.
Dozens of cows and buffaloes in Gorontalo were reportedly infected by the anthrax virus since April 2016. Moreover, five residents also transmitted the cutaneous anthrax disease. The government, in cooperation with the DKPP and the Gorontalo Health Office, is vigorously conducting vaccinations and offering treatments.
