REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government and the European Union (EU) held the first dialog on security policy in the West Java provincial capital of Bandung to discuss efforts to expand areas of security cooperation.

The Indonesian delegation to the meeting was led by Director of Intra Regional Cooperation of American and European Affairs at the Foreign Ministry Dewi Gustina Tobing, while the EU delegation was chaired by Head of EU Division for Counter Terrorism John Gatt-Rutter, the ministry said in a press statement released on Thursday.

The meeting was held to discuss a wide range of issues including counter terrorism and radicalism, maritime security, drug abuse prevention, organized crimes and anti-corruption, creation and maintenance of peace and disaster management.

At the meeting, both sides exchanged views related to the issues agreed upon in the agenda of the meeting and discussed a plan for cooperation which serve as mutual concern.

The EU appreciated the meeting and stressed its commitment to support concrete cooperation.

"The EU has reaffirmed its commitment to security (disturbing) issues such as terrorism and other transnational crimes," John Gatt-Rutter said.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Tobing warmly welcomed the EU commitment to concrete cooperation in the security field and hoped the cooperation could be realized soon.

The meeting is a follow up to the first meeting of Ministerial Strategic Dialog held in Jakarta on April 8 to discuss bilateral, regional and global strategic issues.

At the meeting the Indonesian foreign minister and the vice president of the European Commission agreed to further discuss cooperation in the field of transnational security to deal with terrorism, drug smuggling and other organized transnational crimes.
