REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEXICO CITY -- At least 66,000 people die in Mexico each year from diseases related to tobacco consumption, which means that little more than 180 smokers die every day, according to official figures released today.
On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, experts agreed that before moving on to the discussion of the regulation of other drugs, such as marijuana, the tobacco must be controlled, which is consumed by billion people worldwide, including about 17 million Mexicans.
"Let's see how we can reduce tobacco consumption, which kills about six million people in the world each year, while alcohol kills 3.3 million and illegal drugs some 190,000 people, "said Erick Antonio Ochoa, director of the InterAmerican Heart Foundation in Mexico.
Juan Nunez, coordinator of the National Alliance for Tobacco Control, considered that Mexico faces the challenge and responsibility of reducing the tobacco epidemic through effective regulation.
