REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Australian government, through Indonesia Infrastructure Initiative (IndII), supports research on drinking water and sanitation infrastructure development in Indonesia.

"We are committed to cooperating with the Indonesian government to promote the research-based policy and to boost productivity by improving the quality of life," Counselor of the Minister of Economy, Investment, and Infrastructure at the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Steven Barraclough stated here on Thursday.

Barraclough explained that the partnership between Indonesia and Australia had resulted in eight studies, which are expected to promote policies on drinking water and sanitation management.

The studies cover renovation in irrigation infrastructure, management of social contracts and drinking water, sustainable provision of drinking water and sanitation facilities, as well as web-based application to increase the people's participation in infrastructure development planning.

The studies are expected to promote policy dialog to expand development programs aimed at improving the quality of life of Indonesians.

The drinking water grant program 2015 of IndII showed that 108,891 households depended on women and children to fetch clean water since they did not have water pipeline facilities.

In addition, the research program is expected to help people improve their abilities in the economic sector through government development programs.

"After applying the results of the studies on drinking water and sanitation infrastructure development to improve the people's welfare, the research program will be implemented in other sectors," Barraclough added.
