REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Twenty ulemas from Afghanistan took part in a workshop here recently to understand how Indonesia manages conflicts within the country.

Themed "Islam, leadership, and peace building, study and dialogue visit to Jakarta," the workshop was initiated and supported by international partners including Changing Perspectives Consulting (CPC), Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) and Saneeyee Development Organization, the International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) said in a press statement released on Monday.

The workshop, took place from December 10 to 16 by combining lectures, discussions and field visits, reflects Indonesia's contribution to the ongoing transition and peace process in Afghanistan, the statement said.

Since it was founded in 2002, ICIS has played an active role in initiating peace and resolving conflicts in war-stricken areas including Afghanistan, it said. The steps taken by ICIS are an essential part of second-line diplomacy to support first-line diplomacy.

During the field visit, the Afghan ulemas visited a number of state institutions, mass organizations, and non-government organizations, including the House of Representatives (DPR), the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), the Office of the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI), the Wahid Institute, the Social Affairs Ministry, and the Islamic Center Harokatul Jannah.

A number of national figures, including Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Social Service Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa, and the Chief of Research and Development of the Trade Ministry Abdurrahman Masud addressed the event.

The workshop was held following a request from the Afghan ulemas to understand how Indonesia managed conflicts such as those in Aceh, Ambon and Poso. The experience may serve as an asset to settle political conflicts.
