REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The Indonesia Sea and Coast Guard Directorate (KPLP) of the Directorate General of Sea Transportation has developed cooperation with Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) with regard to improving its human resources.

"The cooperation is aimed at improving human resources and the outlook of the personnel in implementing technical units of sea transportation across Indonesia with regard to their duties, especially when dealing with foreign ships," head of Ship Accidents and Examination of KPLP Directorate Capt. Ferro, said here on Monday.

He stated that the cooperation between KPLP and AMSA has continued for eight years, and one of the routine activities held every year under the program was "Mentoring Port State Control Officer (PSCO)." "The implementation of mentoring is considered to be very effective. Every personnel can exchange views and discuss new provisions as well as experience they gained in their respective ports. Regulations and technology are always updated, and so we must discuss them," he noted.

Mentoring has been carried out twice this year. The first one was held early in the year at Teluk Bayur port in Sumatra, and the second one was held in the last week at Tanjung Perak, Surabaya, East Java, he remarked. Each mentoring activity lasted only five days and was attended by 15 to 20 personnel.

KPLP personnel attending the activity were selected from technical units of the ports visited by international-flagged ships. "The number of personnel taking part in the mentoring activity is limited for each class, so that the materials presented by the team from Australian could be absorbed maximally," he underlined.

He also pointed out that the activities were not only carried out in a classroom but also in the field.

(QS. Al-Ma'idah ayat 6)
