REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, RABAT -- The U.S. Embassy to Morocco warned American citizens of potential demonstrations in the country after U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel a day ago.
In a statement posted on its website on Thursday, the embassy said the decision "may spark protests, some of which have the potential to become violent."
The embassy also reminded U.S. citizens of the need for caution and awareness of personal security, and to avoid areas of demonstrations.
Some Moroccan non-government organizations have called for a national rally on Sunday.
The status quo of the holy city is "a red line that cannot be crossed," El Othmani said during the weekly cabinet meeting, adding that the U.S. decision goes "against resolutions of international legitimacy."
He also reaffirmed his country's robust support for the Palestinian cause of establishing an independent state.
Morocco "has been and will always be a defender of the rights of the Palestinian people in their struggle to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as the capital," the prime minister said.
