REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Islamic scholar Dawam Rahardjo passed away at the age of 75 at Jakarta Islamic Hospital on Wednesday evening. He was known as a Moslem economist and scholar and ICMI chairman from 2015-2020.
"Innalillahi wainnaillahi rojiun (we belong to Allah and to him we shall return). Prof. M. Dawam Rahardjo has just passed away," the chairman of the Indonesia Moslem Scholars Association (ICMI) and also his close friend, Jimly Asshidiqie, said in a text message while calling for prayers for him.
A number of national figures have expressed condolences through Twitter social media. Presidential special staff for economic affairs Erany Yustika through her Twitter account @ahmarerany expressed her deep condolences over his death.
She said Dawam was a great thinker, strong activist and tireless empowerment figure.
"One of his dreams is realizing 'Pancasila Village'," she said.
National economist Rizal Ramli had also expressed condolences saying that Dawam Rahardjo was a populist economist, Moslem scholar and pluralism figure. He said Dawam was never afraid when some Muslims criticized him over his defense to a minority group.

He will be buried at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery after Dzuhur prayer (noon prayer), said Dawams sister-in-law on Wednesday (May 30).
Dawam has been treated for one month at Jakarta Islamic Hospital. He suffered complication diseases, from diabetic, cardiovascular disease, and stroke.
During his lifetime, Dawam has served as ICMI chairman. He also was known as an economic expert and wrote many papers.
He once headed the Ulumul Qur'an Science and Culture Journal, and chair of the ELSAF Foundation (Institute for Religious Studies and Philosophy). He also joined the LP3ES (Institute for Economic and Social Research and Development) as a research staff.

Started from Political Economy essays (1983), Meccan Declaration: Islamic economic essays (1987), Business and management ethics (1990), Habibienomics: Economic development (1995), Paradigm Quran: Methodology and criticism social (2005), Reason of Indonesian Economic Politics (2011).
