REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SINGKAWANG - A great number of people reaching tens of thousands participated in a parade to commemorate the Prophet Muhammad`s birthday in Singkawang on Sunday morning. The estimated three-kilometer long parade started the activity from Singkawang grand mosque in the Merdeka road and passed through several major roads in the city which is known as the "thousand-pagoda" city.
The parade was conducted by the Islamic-holiday committee in cooperation with the local government. The Prophet Muhammad SAW (Peace be Upon Him) was born in the year 610 A.D. in Mecca in a noble Quraish family and known to his compatriots as Al Ameen (the Truthful).
In the meantime, thousands of Muslims in Pontianak, capital of West Kalimantan province also carried out a parade in commemorating the Prophet Muhammad`s birth day on Sunday.
The city`s Muslim Defenders front chairman, Ishak Almuntahar said that the parade was participated in by around 40 Islamic organizations including some Islamic boarding schools.
