REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - About one hundred thousand Christians gathered on Thursday in Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) and held World Prayer Assembly (WPA) 2012. The prayer is for celebrating Ascension Day of Jesus Christ. Police were standby to secure the event conducted from 15.00-21.00.
"The security was under control," the Spokesman of Jakarta Police Department, Rikwanto, said on Thursday. The condition was supported by the police effort to secure the event in order that Christians could celebrate their activity devotedly and solemnly.
During last week press conference, WPA 2012 committee chairman Reverend Bambang Wijaya said, "The World Prayer Assembly will be a `new wave` to strategically connect and empower the global prayer and mission movements, as Christian leaders from up to 220 nations connect through united prayer, leading to spirit-inspired action to transform our world."
In addition, he said tens of millions of people took part in other parts of the world, uniting their prayers in an effort to shape the history of the world. The prayer event linked live to 371 cities in Indonesia where there were similar gatherings, combining with the Global Day of Prayer broadcast on satellite TV.
