REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MATARAM - Indonesian and American Red Cross hand in hand to tackle the problems of fisherman on West Lombok coast and Mataram. The Chief of Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) in NTB, Mesir Suryadi, said PMI asked American Red Cross (ARC) to help the fisherman because they often became the victim of natural disaster.

"Mainly because coastal erosion that destroys their house," he explained.

The disaster causes the fisherman to keep moving from place to place to find shelter. They are also forced to stop working on the bad weather. No work means no money for them. Suryadi expects the cooperation with ARC can help the fisherman to be independent.

ARC, partnering with the Food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations (FAO), has also helped the recovery of the fishing industry in Aceh's coastal communities following 2004 tsunami. ARC provides financial support for FAO.
