REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Some mysterious child deaths in Cambodia draw some concerns in Indonesia. The Indonesian Ministry of Health has coordinated with World Health Organization (WHO) over this deadly virus.

The Director General of Disease Control and Environmental Health in the Ministry of Health, Tjandra Yoga Aditama, said the ministry has coordinated intensively with WHO and Cambodia Ministry of Health over the disease, including its symptoms and the possibility to spread to neighboring countries.

"The Cambodia Ministry of Health and WHO have not yet gathered all data. The disease is still called undiagnosed syndrome and neuro-respiratory syndrome," he said.

Cambodia Ministry of Health since April has recorded 59 cases with most of them is children under five years old. "The laboratory sample is not complete because some of them died before investigated. But most of them is positive of Enterovirus EV-71," he explained.

Meanwhile, some deaths are caused by dengue and Streptococcus suis. The investigation does not find H5N1, influenza, SARS, and Nipah as the causes of death.

Yet, WHO has not issued travel warning to and from Cambodia. "I have issued a letter to the Provincial Health Departments and the Heads of Health Department in Ports in Indonesia to monitor the development of the situation," Aditama said.
