Indonesia appointed as president of First Committee in UN

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW YORK - Indonesian Permanent Representative to United Nations (UN) Desra Percaya was chosen as president of the First Committee, in charge of disarmament and international security, for new UN working year in the 67th UN General Assembly in New York. The former Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas led the committee in 1985 while he was Indonesia Permanent Representative to UN.

"The challenges in disarmament and international security are clear and substantive, but it can be averted through cooperation and political will of every party," Ambassador Desra Percaya said in a press release obtained by Republika.

Indonesia is trusted to hold this capacity due to its role and positive contribution towards UN initiative on disarmament and international security. For more than a decade, Indonesia is a leader of the Non-Aligned Movement's Coordinator for Disarmament. 

Indonesia is actively involved in the settlement of South-East Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ). Recently Indonesia has ratified Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).
