REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia plans to expand its automotive market to Australia through ASEAN Australian New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZ-FTA). "Australia becomes the most important market for national automotive in regional after ASEAN considering its big demand," the Director General of High-Technology Leading Industry in the Ministry of Industry, Budi Darmadi, said on Wednesday.

Australian automotive market, he said, was relatively big or around a million units per year and dominated by products from Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. "Indonesia wants to take five percent of the market within the next five years or around 10,000 units per year," he said.

Government claimed that Australians were interested in 1,800 cc SUV (sport utility vehicle). Meanwhile, Indonesia only produces 1,500 cc SUV.

"Our automotive products have reached Venezuela, Mexico, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Uni Arab Emirates," he said.
