REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia has ratified Rotterdam Convention regarding certain hazardous chemical and pesticide. With the ratification, Indonesia is expected to play a key role in international agreement in relation to importation of hazardous chemicals.

"Including the prevention of illegal toxic chemicals in international trade," the Vice President Boediono said on Monday.

He said that Indonesia would be actively involved as decision-maker on toxic chemicals, protecting the country from negative impact of illegal toxic trade. Boediono said that Indonesia would soon prepare operational measures to implement the law.

Indonesia has also ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

"The ratification is important as Indonesia is rich of genetic resources," he said. The ratification allows Indonesia to protect and conserve genetic resources and traditional knowledge on genetic resources.
