Dubai expands its investment in Batam

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON - A Dubai company, Drydocks World and Maritime World (DMWM), plans to expand its investment in Batam. The company -in ship repair, conversion and new building- signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indonesian company Bina Bangun Bahari (BBB). 

Both parties cooperate in property management covering a 178 hectare area in Batam worth 2.5 billion USD. Acting Consulate General of Indonesia in Dubai, Heru Sudrajat, who witnesed the signing ceremony, said the area was projected to develop infrastructure, industry and energy, considering that the area was a part of Pendulum of the Archipelago (Pendulum Nusantara) program. The program aims to create a single sea corridor for transporting goods within Indonesia. Besides Batam, other seaports are in Belawan, Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Perak, Makassar and Sorong.

Based on the MoU, they will build a big capacity port in Batam to provide access of goods distribution within Indonesia to boost domestic trade.

Chairman of DWMW, Khamis Juma Buamim, beleives the project will give benefit for both parties as well as other business partners and economic development in Indonesia. Buamin added that Indonesia needed advance support on infrastructure and downstream industry to maintain and support the economic growth. 

In Indonesia, DWMW builds three facilities of dockyards. They are Drydocks World Nanindah serving ship making, Drydocks World Pertama serving ship repair and the modern Drydocks World Graha serving off shore construction.
