REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Minister of Finance Agus Martowardojo likely faces rocky road in his way to become the next governor of Bank Indonesia (BI). The House of Representatives argue that Martowardojo has several critical notes that have to be clarified.
Deputy Speaker of Commission XI at the House, Harry Azhar Azis, mentioned that Martowardojo's nomination procedure contained problems, from Hambalang project graft case to Newmont Nusa Tenggara conflict. The Commission plans to discuss the matter next month.
"We have two questions. Whether he is an old candidate or a new one?" Azis said on Tuesday. Martowardojo was a candidate of BI governor along with Raden Pardede on 2008. He was failed as the House said he was not qualified.
"If he is an old candidate, Commission XI will return nomination letter to the President because it violates Laws of BI," he said. "But, if he is a new candidate, we can accept it," he continued.
However, Martowardojo will still face a bumpy road as the House plans to hold hearing with Director General of Tax, State Intelligence Agency (BIN), Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), and also bankers. The House will bombard him with questions over Hambalang graft case, government's failure on purchase Newmont interest and his performance as a Minister of Finance.
The House will suggest him to step down from his post as minister. "It is not a problem if he refuse to be nominated as governor. But, we are questioning his credibility if he refuse to step down from his office," he said.
Presidential Spokesman, Julian A Pasha, said government waited political proses in the parliament.
