REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK - University of Indonesia (UI) launched two new programs for bachelor degree on Islamic Economics and Islamic Business. Acting Dean of Economic Faculty, Jossy P Moeis said that both programs were important to implement Islamic economics in Indonesia.

The Islamic Economis program will develop the economics that focuses on developing mental, spriritual, and knowledge of human capital. Islamic Business program will develop knowledge on business and ethical finance, halal business oriented and productive in real sector, focusing on whole basic of human needs and protecting the environment.

"It is necessary to prepare professionals, researchers and academics who become the backbone of Islamic industries and economic sectors," Moeis said on Monday. 

Center for Economic and Business Research Sharia in 2012 showed that 65 percent of Islamic banking employees have bachelor degree, while 25 percent were recruited from college.

Demands also came from Islamic insurance, Islamic capital market, Islamic microfinance and Islamic institutions in real sector such as the halal industry and other organizations such as zakat and waqf. UI is ambitious to make both programs as a leading program for Islamic economic education in Southeast Asia.
