REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration has sent a special team to monitor 4,900 job cuts at PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna, the largest cigarette company by market value in Indonesia. The cigarette maker plans to close its factories in Jember and Lumajang, both in East Java.
"Minister Muhaimin Iskandar has sent a special team to handle this case. The team will provide an escort, monitoring and assistance for the company and its workers, as well as to ensure that workers' basic rights will be met," Director General of Industrial Relations and Labor Social Security, R Irianto Simbolon said recently.
The team will ensure that the process run well and mutually beneficial. HM Sampoerna has halt its production since May 16, 2014. There are 2,300 workers in Jember and 2,600 workers in Lumajang.
Ministry of Manpower has coordinated with company and workers, also Manpower and Transmigration Department in East Java. Simbolon said that company and workers had reached an agreement, which could be received by both parties.
