REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Chairul Tanjung denied that the contract of PT Freeport Indonesia had been extended until 2041. The new contract extension can be signed in 2019 or two years before the expired date in 2021.

"The information is not true. The authority of contract extension is in the hand of next president. It can only be signed two years before the expired date," Tanjung said at State Palace on Monday.

He clarified that Freeport contract in Indonesia will end in 2021. It means, the discussion of new contract will be held in 2019. Government currently can only renegotiate, but cannot decide the extension with the US-based natural resource company.

"We cannot extend the contract now, but in 2019. The next government will do it," Tanjung added.

Several ministers have met with Freeport representatives in Jakarta. They are Tanjung, Minister of Industry (MS Hidayat), Minister of Trade (M Luthfi), Minister of Finance (Chatib basri) and Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resource (Susilo Siswoutomo). However, the discussion is still on going process.
