REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian sports contingent for the 2015 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Nanjing, China, would introduce the instrument angklung through an art performance, a chairperson of the sports team Puspa Rani said Monday.
She noted that national art performance must be given by every participating country at the quadrennial championship for athletes under the age of 18 years.
"Each participant is required to perform. This is one of the togetherness expressions among the athletes who participate in the championship," she said, adding that the event would be held from 16 to 28 August.
According to her, all the Indonesian athletes have been trained to play the traditional musical instrument from West Java made of bamboo. Two traditional songs would be performed in Nanjing: Suwe Ora Jamu, a Javanese song, which means long time no herbal drink, and Rasa Sayange, a Maluku song, which means a feel of affection, Puspa explained.
"No special preparations have been made for singing the songs, as they are easy to listen and enjoyable," she pointed out.
Puspa added that in order to introduce the musical instrument to the international community, the team would bring lots of angklung, so that the other participants can also join. At the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, Indonesia is represented by 27 athletes in 10 events. Indonesia targets to bag more than two gold medals from weightlifting as a mainstay branch besides beach volleyball.
