REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Education and Culture Minister M Nuh said that education had become the key word for Indonesian independence.
"At least there are four reasons why we (Indonesia) gained the independence," he said at the Merdeka Palace on Sunday evening.
According to him, the first reason is that the education shows self existence as a nation without having to be controlled by another nation. Second, education should be able to affirm the principles of state ideology that has been agreed upon. Third, education should be able to raise the people's welfare, while the fourth was that the education must relate to justice, Nuh stated.
"To that end, the key word lies on the education," the minister pointed out.
Nuh further said that during his tenure, he continued to pursue effort to expand access to education especially for poor children.'"For example, the gross enrollment rate (APK) for children aged 19-23 years in 2004 was 14 percent, but currently 29.9 percent. It was more than doubled, plus a viewfinder mission affirmation," he added.
