REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ministry of Trade bans import on used clothes in order to protect domestic consumers. The ban is cited on Ministry of Trade Regulation No. 54/M-DAG/PER/10/2009 on General Requirements of Import. It is stated that all consumer goods entering Indonesia must be in good condition.

"The current trading of used clothes is illegal. We have to prevent it. Importing used clothes hamper our local garment industry," Minister of Trade Rachmat Gobel said on Tuesday, February 3.

The effort to ban such import has started since monetary crisis in 1998. However, government could not limit the import. A lot of low quality products entered Indonesian market.

Gobel said that government would issue new regulation on the import of used clothes soon. The toughest sanction for the importer of used clothes will be imprisonment. "If we cannot control the trade of used clothes, we will cooperate with Customs," he said.
