REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Defense Minister of Thailand, General Prawit Wongsuwon in Ministry of Defense office, Jakarta, on Thursday, May 21. The defense cooperation agreement facilitates the collaborative efforts of Indonesia and Thailand in order to face the challenges of global security.
Minister Ryamizard hoped, cooperation in the defense field could encourage collaborations in other sectors, including accelerating the peaceful settlement delimitation of exclusive economic zone and maritime sector which also involves an institution outside the Ministry of Defense and the armed forces or the military.
According to him, the armed forces or the military is into a national instrument to protect the safety and integrity of a country against the real threat (nontraditional) and non real (traditional).
"The threat includes four general natures which do not recognize national borders, beyond the reach of military functions, difficult to detect and predict and come from non-state actors," said Ryamizard.
Given the nature of the threat, he said, it is difficult for a country to confront these threats individually. On that basis, it took a collaborative effort through cooperation both bilaterally and multilaterally.
"Therefore, the cooperation of the armed forces of both countries are expected to provide an important contribution to the collaborative efforts," said former chief of staff of the Army (KSAD).
At the end of the meeting, the Indonesian Defense Minister expressed determination to support joint training field of Military Medicine and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) within the framework of ADMM Plus. In military exercise in Thailand in 2016, Ministry of Defense and TNI will participate by sending personnel and other assets in order to support the success of the exercise.
