REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia will convert the assignment of peacekeeper in Sudan, Liberia, Congo, Lebanon, and UNAMED to be the observers in Syria. “There are six of them. Because the process is faster that recruitment process,” the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marty Natalegawa, said on Tuesday.
Those peacekeepers, he said, were the right observers because United Nations urgently needed them.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is also ready to help UN by sending the observers to Syria, but only with two conditions. Natalegawa said, the first thing was the existence of cease-fire and the second is the approval from Syrian government.
“There are two considerations that we delivered to Secretary General of UN. He said that it became the UN concern,” Natalegawa said.
The UN requested Indonesia to involve in the observers. The request, he added, had proved that Indonesia gain international recognition. “I think it is the realization of UN put their trust on Indonesia,” he said.
The observers are the advanced tea. Their tasks are to observe, monitor, and become military staff officer. UN will send 30 observers to Syria. Six of them are from Indonesia. Their main task is emphasized to communicate and negotiate the peace.
