REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Several Indonesian figures were reported to attend the Israeli Independence Day in School of the Arts, Singapore. Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) Founder and Chairman, Joserizal Jurnalis, regretted those who attended the event.

“They have breached Indonesian constitution,” Joserizal said on Monday. Joserizal also denounced them as traitors. “The guests must be aware that Israel is the occupier. They should not have attended the event.”

According to Constitution of Indonesia, he said, independence is a genuine right of all nations and any form of foreign occupation thus be erased as it against humanity and justice.

He said Israel occupies Palestine, the country that has the right to be independent. He also added that politicians and officials attended the event could not officiate in Indonesia. “They are better quitting from office, as they do not deserve to be politicians here,” he said.

Personal invitation

Ferry Mursyidan Baldan is one of the politicians who attended the event. He admitted that he attended the event with his wife to fulfill the invitation. He also said that he was used to communicate with anyone, including Israel.

“This is a private invitation sent by Israel embassy. For me it is normal. I am used to build a communication with everyone,” he said on Monday.

He added, as a politician who had the background in international relations, it was usual to communicate with everyone. For instance, he often communicates with his friends from Taiwan, FPI, GAM, South Thailand, New Zealand, and Vatican.

During the cocktail party, he asked the Israel Ambassador to change his mind set over Palestine. Ferry also added that Indonesia should change its mindset as the country was not against neither certain religion nor ethnic state. On talking about diplomatic relationship, we should see the humanity aspect, he said.

What happened all this time, he said, was a causal relationship. Indonesia does not recognize Israel as a country. There was also a reason why Israel did not recognize Palestine as a country, he said. He added the essence of a country was recognition on people, civilization, and community. One thing that was wrong, he said, was Israel position as a determinant whether a country could exist or not.

“Dispute can happen everywhere. Even with Malaysia which share same tribe with us, we can differ. The point is to change the mindset,” he said.
